The Headache

The Headache The Pain Hazel wakes with an apocalyptic headache. She screams. Her parents rush her to the hospital. The Diagnosis She is diagnosed with poor oxygenation due to fluid in her lungs. A liter and a half of fluid is drained. She has a chest tube. The PET Scan A PET scan shows no tumor growth. The pain was from lack of oxygen. Hazel is relieved but exhausted.

Recovery The ICU Hazel is in the ICU. She is alone due to infection risk. She hears a child die down the hall. The Nurse Alison, her nurse, is kind. She gives her ice chips and talks to her. Hazel is grateful. Augustus's Vigil Augustus waits in the waiting room. He sneaks in to see her once. He holds her hand. He is caught and asked to leave.

Going Home

Going Home The Discharge Hazel is finally discharged. She is weak but alive. She sees Augustus, who smiles. The Letter from Van Houten Augustus gives her a letter from Van Houten, which encourages her to live her life. She decides to fight for the Amsterdam trip. The New Normal Hazel uses a BiPAP at night. She is more aware of her fragility. She resolves to make the most of her time.
